Moorland Pottery

Originally thought to have been built by Royal Daulton, the Moorland Pottery kiln and main building has been in use since the 1920s. The current owners have run the establishment since 1987 and had been carrying out comprehensive restoration works since 1990. To complete the refurbishment the terracotta façade, which was discoloured from years of weathering and carbon deposits, needed to be attended to.

EcoLogic was asked to give the building a deep clean to return it to its original colour. Because Moorland Pottery is located on a busy pavement next to a main road, EcoLogic had to manage both foot and road traffic and needed to ensure that the cleaning process would not cause any damage to surrounding areas.

The biggest challenge, however, was preserving the integrity of the building's lime-based mortar. A building product often used at the time of the kiln's construction, this type of mortar is particularly soft and could be easily removed. EcoLogic, therefore, used a non-abrasive system that would treat both the terracotta brick and its mortar with extreme care, while still achieving a spotless finish.
